European Atomic Energy Society (EAES) is an organization that was founded in 1954 and unites European research organizations in the field of nuclear energy. The most important function of EAES today is the exchange of information on trends of research in the field of nuclear energy in organizations’ home countries. EAES consisting of the Council (member from the JSI is Leon Cizelj) and Working group (member from the JSI is Ivo Kljenak). The Working group has each year, usually in November or December, a separate two-day meeting.

First day of the meeting of the Working group mainly next combined meeting of the Council and Working group, which will be held from 3. to 7. 6. 2017 in Ghent (Belgium), was being prepared. At this meeting the following topics will be discussed:

  • evaluation of the programs, capability and knowledge in the nuclear research and development centres in order to preserve the national nuclear competences,
  • progress in setting up small modular reactors,
  • safety of nuclear research centres.

The second day of the meeting we visited the complex of hot cells in the Nuclear Research and Consultancy Group (NRG) in Petten. At the end of the meeting we discussed a theme of promoting international collaboration between research organizations, which should be more intense. The task force, which was appointed at combined meeting in June 2016 in Warsaw (Poland) was confirmed and will prepare position paper which will be submitted to the members of the EAES till the next combined meeting.

The for the Atomic Energy Society Working group, held in Zaandam (Netherlands) on 17. and 18. 11. 2016 was organized by the Dutch Nuclear Research and Consultancy Group (NRG). It was attended by Dr. Ivo Kljenak from Jozef Stefan Institute, Reactor Engineering Division.
