Modelling of wall bounded turbulent natural convection

Organiser: Jožef Stefan Institute (JSI) (Slovenia), in collaboration with The University of Manchester and Imperial College London (United Kingdom).

A workshop on turbulence modelling of natural convection is proposed. It will consist of a single track of keynote lectures, short research presentations and panel discussions. Expected contributions include RANS, hybrid RANS-LES and LES.

Turbulent natural convection in wall-bounded configurations have been the focus of a number of studies in the past. However, it is only recently that we have obtained DNS-quality validation data for advanced RANS models for the square cavity case with a mean horizontal temperature gradient at a sufficiently high Rayleigh number.

The main objective of the workshop is to re-assess turbulence models for natural convection with the square cavity DNS by Frederic Sebilleau and co-workers (January 2018, 10.1016/j.ijheatmasstransfer.2018.02.042) and the simpler case of turbulent natural convection in a vertical plane channel by Kiš and Herwig (February 2014, 10.1007/s00231-014-1305-5). Registered participants are welcome to submit their simulation results, alongside with a complete description of the turbulence model used.

Workshop fees
Standard fee: 70 euros per participant.
ERCOFTAC members: 50 euros per participant.


This form should be completed, signed and returned by e-mail at sig15ws2019@ijs.si. Local organizers will first confirm the reception of your registration form. Once processed, a confirmation of registration will be send, alongside with instructions for submission of results and payment of the fee.


Upon registration, participants will receive the information, how to proceed with the payment of the fee.


Submission of results
Only registered participants will have access to the templates for the submission of results.


Intention to submit results should be given to the organizers before July 2019. Submission of results will no longer be accepted after September 2019.


The workshop will be held at the Reactor Centre of the Jožef Stefan Institute, located near Ljubljana. The exact adress is Brinje 40, Dol pri Ljubljani.


Rooms have been reserved in the Hotel Park in Ljubljana. Participants are encouraged to make their own reservations directly to the hotel. More information can be found on the reservation form.


How to reach Ljubljana:

  • by Ljubljana airport
    Ljubljana airport is located about 20 km North of Ljubljana - in the direction Kranj.
  • by train
    Ljubljana railways connecting Austria (Graz, Klagenfurt), Italy (Trieste). Main train station is in the city centre. The train-airport connections can also be an option.
  • by bus: www.ap-ljubljana.si/
    The web site of the Ljubljana Bus station (Avtobusna postaja Ljubljana) offers timetables for all local bus connections, including the plan of the bus routes. The ticket office is open daily from about 5.00 or 5.30 till 22.30. For most of the routes you can buy the tickets directly from the driver. Please have small denomination Euro notes and coins ready.
